Profile of the month

Geraldine McDonagh, Commercial Manager, Sydney office.

I was 22 when I decided to embark on my UK trip.  It had been my long term goal ever since I was 13 and my parents took me on a 5 week, European trip. During that trip, I fell in love with London and was determined to return.

My father is actually Irish which meant I was lucky enough to have an Irish passport, so when I’d finished my schooling, got my degree and worked round the clock to get some cash together,  I bit the bullet and booked a one way ticket to the UK.

Looking back this was a bit ambitious. I landed by myself in a city with a population of 8 million and then traveled around Europe on my own for 2 months!  I don’t mind admitting there were some tears at times. However the good times far outweighed the bad and my highlights have got to include; sailing down the coast of Croatia with 5 friends, attending the Exit rock festival in Serbia and paragliding in Turkey.

When I got back from Europe I settled down to work in the UK, My field was recruitment and it was at this point that I started helping Aussies, Kiwis and Saffas relocate to the UK. I was quickly promoted and managed a large team of staff.

As well as progressing on the career ladder I did not neglect my social life! I spent most of my time in the UK at gigs- I love my music!! And I would have to say London is one of the most vibrant places on the live music scene. I saw so many artists that would never make it down under, at half the price! I managed to attend Glastonbury twice, as well as Oxygen in Ireland.
Every other weekend I would spend with my friends, exploring London. My favourite spots included the Borough markets, Portobello road and Primrose hill, having dinner parties and of course heading to my local pub for the odd pint.

Top Tips for people heading over to the UK or who have recently arrived

Professionally: Remember that job opportunities will relate directly to your experience. UK employers highly regard UK experience. Be proactive with your job search. Get your CV out there, and continually harass recruiters and employers directly.

Socially: If you are heading over by yourself, be prepared to get out of your comfort zone if you want to make friends and settle in quickly. The best way to network is to move into a share house, connect with the people you work with and you will soon be a 'social butterfly.' Be open- minded, don't be afraid to try new things and get involved.

After four fantastic years in the UK, I realised I had achieved all my goals, and it was a question of where I wanted to live; Sydney or London! I chose Sydney as all my family and friends are there and the fact that people don't turn grey over winter is also a bonus.

Speaking from my experience, your time in the UK is a win, win situation. Not only do you have a great time when you are there but once you return, Australian employers are desperate to snap you up.

I landed a great job and am currently working as the commercial manager for Fastrack’s relocation services. Everyday I use the valuable lessons I learnt when I was in the UK, to help ensure our candidates experience a stress free and successful relocation to the UK.
